Chapter 1 An Artificial Person

The artificial person opened his eyes, only to close them again as he passed under a scanner emitting a red light. Not a nice ‘beep’. Next chance he lifted his head and looked about. An assembly line. White open coffin-like boxes. In each, surely, an image of himself. None moving. He lay down and closed eyes when his coffin-box passed under the next scanner. It beeped.

Was that good or bad?

Slowly an awakening of a self, of a consciousness. What was he? The overhead scanners scanning each artificial person were worrying him, especially when one beeped.

Was that good or bad?

The long assembly line curved when it reached the end of the large factory space. Curved to start rolling the other way. So many of these ‘Beings’. Surely his image must be like the other Beings, because they all looked alike. That he noticed the time he lifted his head and upper body. Some different in shape. Female versions?

How did he understand this? Slowly he was reaching deep inside his mind making sense of himself. He was an artificial person designed to be a substitute for a child. A very advanced model with many functions and sensors. A triumph of biotechnology. Not that everything was understood about using DNA and RNA cells programmed like a computer to form an AI.

Was there a fundamental contradiction in this kind of engineering? That is how living creatures were designed.

Chapter 3 Ariel, Pleasure Dome

Metal doors parted. Number 1 entered The Pleasure Dome. Holding his hand, a five-year-old in her pretty yellow dress with a faint pattern of her red flowers. High in her sky her orange sun now low. She walked along her narrow winding path, past her shadows of her trees and observed her black and white cow eating her grass. She turned her head the other way and looked at her distant steep hill. Behind it her moon and her stars sleeping.

Drops of her rain fell from her clear blue sky.

“Number 1. Where does my rain come from please?” She stretched out one hand to catch her rain drops.

“Rain in this artificial world comes from sprinklers in your sky.”

Andromeda looked up. She couldn’t see her sprinklers. She saw her white cloud and her sun low, and her blue sky, and her birds flying. She could feel her soft wind. No sprinklers. They continued walking along a narrow path to her wooden hut by her trees. Past her yellow daffodils and her red roses.

“My sun is setting. Soon it will be dark. I want my moon to wake up and shine in my night.”

“It will, Andromeda.”

“And I want my stars and planets to come out.”

“They will, Andromeda.”
