Neuroscience

The size of the brain varies between people. This, however, does not seem to make a difference to intelligence. An example is Albert Einstein’s brain, said to be one of the greatest physicists of our era. He left his brain to science and it is preserved in a museum. It is a relatively small brain. However, with Einstein caution is required. He seems to be accepted as a physics genius, and yet his famous equation E=m*c*c is in fact meaningless (refer Science of Life for explanation). The theories of Relativity also involve ‘magical thinking’. Why is he so famous is not clear. While he did receive a Nobel Prize, this was not for anything in particular. In fact, he only received it by default. The Science of Life in fact rejects anything to do with Einstein. The reason is that ‘magical thinking’ which is a psychiatric symptom.

The common term is IQ which stands for intelligence quotient. This is usually determined when a person is about 16 and is the end result of a series of tests.

The average IQ is 100. University graduates tend to be between 120 to 130. Medical doctors tend to have an IQ of around 150. Above 165+, that is usually considered as genius level.

However, this is more an intellectual intelligence than overall intelligence. This type of test does not know how, for example, measure the intelligence of an artist or the gift of a musician. The test may be flawed too in cases when a person is an immigrant or belongs to a culture which views things differently. For example. The English language is known for its strict syntax. This is not the case with many other languages. In English the sentence “the dog jumped over the fence” only makes sense when it is put together correctly - but in other languages it makes no difference whether the sentence is more or less backwards, it still make sense to a person skilled in that language and conveys the intended message.

Thus an IQ test is a valid measure of intellectual intelligence but only when all other things are equal.

An Italian lady had a tumour, a growth, in an area of the brain. After removal, she could no longer count to more than 4. Anything more than 4 was completely alien to her.

From studying brain injury of this type, we can infer much about which areas of the brain contribute to which ability.

Visual intelligence

People learn differently. Some people learn best by learning from visual input, others from touching and experimenting with that which is to be learned, others learn by listening.

One of the challenges of adult educators, meaning teachers of adults, is to work out how a particular person best learns. This simply varies between people.
